PrEP and Anti-Virals

Florida Department of Health in Volusia County Clinical Services

What is PrEP?

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP) is when people at very high risk for HIV take HIV medicines daily to lower their chances of getting infected. PrEP can stop HIV from taking hold and spreading throughout your body.

PrEP Basic Infromation

PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV if used as prescribed. Daily PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99 percent. Among people who inject drugs, it reduces the risk by at least 74 percent. Since PrEP only protects against HIV, condom use is still important for the protection against other STDs. Condom use is also important to help prevent HIV is PrEP is not taken as prescribed.

Only a healthcare provider can prescribe PrEP. The cost of PrEP is covered by many health insurance plans. Low-cost or free PrEP may be available to patients with limited income or no insurance. For more information, please call our clinical services appointment line, (386) 274-0509.
