Viruses carried by mosquitoes are called arboviruses, including chikungunya, dengue fever, eastern equine encephalitis, malaria, St. Louis encephalitis, and West Nile virus.

Volusia County Animal Services enforces ordinances and provides services to the unincorporated areas of Volusia County and the city of Oak Hill. If you live within the limits of a city, please contact your local animal services.

The Florida Department of Health in Volusia County partners with Volusia County Mosquito Control to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne illness in the community. Mosquito control agencies throughout the state monitor mosquito populations.


Hepatitis

The Florida Department of Health has developed a comprehensive program of treatment, testing, and care for preventing the spread of HIV and helping those with HIV improve their quality of life. 


Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

Screening, counseling, and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases is available at the Florida Department of Health on a walk-in basis, no appointment necessary.


Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is a disease caused by the bacteria mycobacterium tuberculosis that usually attacks the lungs but can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine and brain. If not treated properly, it can result in death. The Florida Department of Health in Volusia County provides treatment for active tuberculosis cases, conducting investigations and surveillance. 


Food-Borne Illness

The Florida Department of Health investigates illness outbreaks associated with food illnesses. Investigations are conducted to determine the source of the outbreak, prevent future spread, and future occurrences. The Florida Department of Health does not have regulatory authority of grocery or convenience stores or food processors. These are under the regulatory authority of DACS.


Food Hygiene

The Florida Department of Health in Volusia County regulates food service operations of the following types of establishments, ensuring they are operating in a safe and sanitary manner:

  • Schools (public and private)
  • Residential facilities
  • After-school meal programs
  • Correctional facilities
  • Civic and fraternal organizations
  • Theaters (that limit their menu to drinks, candy, popcorn, hotdogs, and nachos)
  • Bars and lounges (that do not serve food)
The Florida Department of Health does not have regulatory authority over the food areas of hospitals, nursing homes, childcare facilities, group homes, churches, and other not-for profit organizations.
