Volusia County Institutes Countywide Burn Ban
Amid Drought Conditions

VOLUSIA COUNTY, FLORIDA – Volusia County will implement a countywide burn ban effective at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, June 6, prohibiting the ignition and burning of open fires until further notice. The County has instituted the ban to protect life and property in the community in response to the current drought index and conditions.

The countywide restriction bans all outdoor burning not permitted by the Florida Forest Service. This includes bonfires, campfires, and yard debris burning.

However, the use of above-ground charcoal, gas, and electric grills is permitted. Residents should ensure that charcoals are fully extinguished after cooking. Barrel-type barbecue smokers are also allowed as they do not constitute open burning. Residents should avoid outdoor cooking methods near heavily wooded areas.

Volusia County Fire Rescue has already responded to multiple wildfires this year and is urging residents to adopt preventive measures to safeguard their homes and families. These measures include creating a 30-foot defensible space around homes, clearing trash and dead vegetation from yards, removing leaves and debris from roofs and gutters, and exercising extreme caution when grilling, camping, or discarding cigarettes.

Residents should monitor the County’s social media accounts and website for updates and call 911 if they see smoke or fire. Violations of the burn ban can result in penalties
