Emergency cold weather shelters open in Volusia County as temperatures plummet

In response to the anticipated drop in temperatures to below 40 degrees, multiple cold weather shelters will open tonight, Dec. 18. These shelters provide a vital refuge for individuals without an adequate heating source in their home and those without housing.

On the west side of the county, The Neighborhood Center's The Bridge, 421 S. Palmetto Ave., DeLand, will welcome those in need. Individuals need to arrive no later than 6 p.m. to secure shelter. For more information or assistance, call 386-734-8120 ext. 601.

For residents on the east side of the county, Halifax Urban Ministries (HUM) is coordinating with churches to offer shelter. Individuals must contact HUM at 386-317-5886 to make arrangements for sheltering.

Residents requiring assistance to reach these shelters are advised to contact the respective organization on their side of the county for information on transportation services. For more details on cold weather safety and other related resources, visit www.volusia.org/coldweather
