Volusia County, Fl – The Florida Department of Health in Volusia County oversees the federal nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children. WIC provides free healthy foods, nutrition education and counseling, breastfeeding support and referrals for health care and other services.

The program is for pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children under age 5. In Volusia County there are over 7,600 clients enrolled, with many more eligible to participate. To find out if you qualify, use the online WIC prescreening tool.

In Florida WIC clients use a WIC EBT (electronic benefit transfer) card to purchase WIC approved foods at authorized WIC grocery stores. WIC foods include iron-fortified infant cereal, adult cereal, vitamin C-rich fruit juice, eggs, milk (lactose free or soy are options), cheese, peanut butter, dried and canned beans/peas, and canned fish. Fruits and vegetables, baby foods, whole-wheat bread, and other whole-grain options were recently added to better meet the nutritional needs of WIC participants.

WIC recognizes and promotes breastfeeding as the optimal source of nutrition for infants. For women who do not fully breastfeed, WIC provides iron-fortified infant formula. Special infant formulas and medical foods may be provided when prescribed by a physician for a specified medical condition.

The Florida WIC Mobile App gives WIC participants the opportunity to view upcoming appointments, scan and upload documents for upcoming appointments, view food benefits that have been issued, scan UPCs while shopping at the store to see if the UPC is a WIC approved item or not and provide information on locations of WIC stores and WIC clinics throughout Florida. The goal of the Florida WIC Mobile App is to give participants all the information they need at their fingertips to make their shopping experience fun and easy.

To register to use the Florida WIC Mobile App, you must be a WIC participant and have been issued a WIC EBT card. The app is available from Google Play and the Apple Store.

Staff at DOH-Volusia have been working to reduce wait times for WIC clients. Currently WIC services are available by appointment in our Orange City office at 775 Harley Strickland Blvd., Suite 110 and at our Daytona Beach office at 1845 Holsonback Drive. (Our Keech Street location in Daytona Beach was damaged during Hurricane Ian but should reopen sometime in 2023).

WIC certifications are done in person. The clients (mom, baby, child) who will be receiving the benefits, must be present for the certification visit. Other WIC services will likely be completed with a tele-health visit. To reduce wait times, we ask that all clients try to keep their scheduled appointments and make sure to update their contact information (phone and email address) and have working voicemail. For more information, call (866) 942-3663.
