Smoke-free workplaces and campuses

Florida Department of Health in Volusia County Tobacco Prevention

Tobacco free workplace sign

Fact: Exposure to secondhand smoke increases risks for heart attacks and stroke.

Developing smoke-free policies for the workplace protects non-smoking employees from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke and support people who are ready to quit. There also are benefits to the employer. Implementing smoke-free policies can reduce property and healthcare insurance costs.

Employer benefits of smoke-free policies*

  • A tobacco-free environment helps create a safer, healthier workplace.

  • Direct health care costs to the company may be reduced.

  • A clear plan to lower employees' exposure to secondhand smoke shows the company cares.

  • Maintenance costs go down when tobacco, smoke, matches, and cigarette butts are taken out of work facilities.

  • Office equipment, carpets, and furniture last longer.

  • The risk of fires is lower.

  • It may be possible to get lower rates on health, life, and disability insurance coverage as fewer employees use tobacco.

According to the American Cancer Society

Workplaces may improve the environment for employees and decrease costs associated with smoking by:

  • Eliminating tobacco use on campuses

  • Prohibiting tobacco use in company vehicles

  • Encouraging tobacco cessation

  • Providing resources to quit

Volusia County's smoke-free worksites

DOH-Volusia's Tobacco Prevention Program has worked with several local worksites to create or strengthen their tobacco-free policies.

To be considered tobacco-free, a worksite must prohibit smokable and smokeless devices (combustible and non-combustible tobacco products) including cigarettes, cigars, electronic nicotine delivery system devices, and chewing tobacco such as dip, snus and snuff.

Worksites that have implemented a tobacco-free grounds policy with no designated smoking areas include:

  • Jackie Robinson Ballpark

  • Stetson University

  • Bethune-Cookman University

  • Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

  • Daytona State College

  • Product Quest Manufacturing

Worksites that have implemented a tobacco-free grounds policy with designated smoking areas include:

  • Teledyne Oil & Gas

  • EG Industries

  • Thompson & Pump

  • New Smyrna Beach Utilities Commission
