DOH-Volusia Helping Pregnant Women Quit Smoking

By Holly Smith

July 18, 2016

Volusia County, Fla. - Nearly three months after its launch, the first Baby & Me Tobacco Free Program in Florida has a full roster. To build additional community support for the program, the Tobacco Free Florida – Volusia County Partnership is hosting a public meeting beginning at 4 p.m., Monday, July 25, at the Florida Department of Health in Volusia County, 1845 Holsonback Road, Daytona Beach.

The Partnership is working to extend the program to help more mothers. At the meeting, community partners will be encouraged to sponsor one or two clients. Discussion and other tobacco prevention issues also will be discussed.

Baby & Me Tobacco Free Program was created to reduce the burden of tobacco use on pregnant and post-partum women. Expectant mothers who smoke are more likely to have premature and low birth weight babies. Quitting smoking reduces these dangers and the damaging effects of secondhand smoke on their children.

The Baby & Me Tobacco Free Program is being used in 15 states. Volusia County is first to bring it to Florida.

The Tobacco Free Florida – Volusia County Partnership is a county-wide, locally organized group committed to saving lives and improving the overall health and wellbeing of residents and visitors by reducing and/or eliminating the use of tobacco products. The Partnership is organized to advocate on the local, state and national level for: prevention of the initiation of tobacco use among youth; protection from secondhand smoke; and, promotion of tobacco cessation.

The public is encouraged to attend Partnership presentations and meetings. The meeting also is available via conference call (audio only) at 1-888-670-3525, passcode 917 914 7160.

*Editor’s note: Tobacco Free Florida’s and DOH-Volusia’s assistance with local tobacco free policy efforts are not lobbying but are services to build awareness and support of jurisdictional voluntary initiatives to improve the health of Floridians.
