Epidemiologist promoted to senior position

Daytona Beach, Fla. - Dr. Paul Rehme has been promoted to director of disease control for the Florida Department of Health in Volusia County.

“Dr. Rehme is extremely knowledgeable in public health,” said Patricia Boswell, DOH-Volusia administrator. “I have the utmost confidence in Dr. Rehme’s skills and his ability to lead DOH-Volusia’s disease control efforts to provide a high degree of service to the community.”

Since August 2013, Rehme, 57, has lead the department’s epidemiology division. The division conducts surveillance, prevention and control of communicable diseases, including investigating disease outbreaks, analyzing disease trends and providing education and consultation to medical providers and the community, Boswell added.

In his new role, Rehme will oversee DOH-Volusia’s epidemiology and communicable disease divisions, which includes HIV, tuberculosis and sexually transmitted disease programs.

Rehme has a doctorate of veterinary medicine from the University of Florida, a masters of public health in epidemiology from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and a bachelor of science in biology from Florida State University. He practiced small-animal medicine in Orange Park, FL, before serving in the U.S. Air Force for 24 years as a public health officer. He retired from the armed services as a lieutenant colonel before joining DOH-Volusia.
