Florida Department of Health in Volusia County Encourages Cervical Cancer Prevention

January 20, 2016

Daytona Beach - The Florida Department of Health in Volusia County recognizes January as Cervical Cancer Awareness month.

“Women are encouraged to take action and take charge of their health,” said Ron Rondeau, interim director of the Florida Department of Health in Volusia County. “It is important to speak with a medical provider about cervical cancer risks and what steps you can take to lower your risk.”

Cervical Cancer is the easiest gynecological cancer to prevent with regular Pap tests. Pap tests look for precancers or cell changes, on the cervix that can be treated so that cervical cancer is prevented. The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main cause of cervical cancer. Talk to a medical provider about when a Pap test is most appropriate for you.

In recognition of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, DOH-Volusia will participate in the following “for peace of mind” events:

  • January 21 at 5:30 p.m., Volusia County Library, New Smyrna Beach Auditorium B, 1001 S. Dixie Freeway, New Smyrna Beach

  • January 28 at 11 a.m., Volusia County Library, Port Orange Auditorium #2, 1005 City Center Circle, Port Orange

At these events, participants will receive information and assistance in locating breast and cervical cancer screening locations in their county.

The department’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program provides breast and cervical cancer screenings to women ages 50-64 throughout Florida who are uninsured and at or below the poverty level. The program has 16 lead sites that cover all counties in Florida. DOH-Volusia serves as one of the lead sites.
